I am a new coach and had a question about training for the 800. I believe that it is around 60% aerobic and 40% anaerobic. If not then please correct me if I am wrong.
So my question is this! If going with a lower mileage/speed approach to training. Is it possible to do hard workouts squeezed between longer tempo/threshold type intervals or runs instead of just easy slow running?
For instance something like this. Or is this too much and a recipe for disaster? I am just throwing this together quickly as a reference. It would also include proper warmups and cool downs.
M-6xflying 50’s at Max Effort w/4 min recovery
T-6x600 at tempo/threshold
W-6x300 at 800 GP w/3 min recovery
Th-2 mile tempo
F-Easy pre meet w/fast strides
S-Race
Su-Off
I know that Texas A&M has had great success with their more speed oriented 800 runners. Does anyone have any insight to their type of training?
