If it means the U.S. can keep getting European based soccer players who have barely been to the U.S. but can’t make the German, French, or English national teams, I’m all for it.
she grew up there. it's not that difficult. also, she's probably not good enough for it to matter.
Not sure what the last part here means. The current system is pretty unfair in that deeper countries can have 4+ top 25 type athletes and then the 30th-60th best athlete in the world from a different country can get in unopposed. I don’t think Ramsden quite applies as someone intentionally benefiting (better examples: Parsons, Praught-Leer). But Ramsden could make it in narrowly hitting the standard/ranking while 3:59 or faster type athletes in the US (MacKay, Sinclaire Johnson, Hiltz, ESP, McGee, MacLean) all fight for 3 spots. It’s worse in a few spots (W800 US, M1500 UK, W1500 US, W1500 ETH, W5000 ETH, M5000 ETH, W10000 KEN, M800 KEN, Sprints -USA/JAM)

No, American is not an ethnicity, except native people. As for Maori in NZ. I mentioned it because a nationality is not passed from parent to child the same way an ethnicity is. But she is studying the Pacific, so she is owning it.
It is not for me to say where she's from. Objectively, she is from New Zealand. And also other places.
Alright, delete this thread mods. It's stupid, I admit. Although so are countries on some level.
Her parents are Kiwis though she was born and mostly grew up outside of NZ. As far as I'm concerned, that makes her a Kiwi. It's amusing to hear her totally American accent, but it is what it is.
Charles Hicks is the one that irks me. He was born in London to American parents and has lived most of his life in the US, returning for middle school. He is American through and through and it looks like representing the UK is just about the ease of making teams.
Am I alone here? Like, it's not an ethnicity. It's some islands. That she's not from. But that has easier Olympic teams.
I guess it's nothing new. Multi citizenship is just a higher tier of privilege. I'm just jealous.
Don't be too hard on yourself. Until 400 years ago, everyone was from "somewhere" and moving was almost impossible.
Since the 1600s, more and more people have moved to new places. But until about 1980, even if you moved you were still from somewhere. So a Norwegian who moved to Alberta, Canada was still a Norwegian (with Canadian citizenship).
But in the last 50 years it has evolved again to the point where some people are proud of their heritage and want to retain it even if they change nationalities but others want to be treated as if they are 100% from their adopted countries, and don't ask them any questions, thank you very much.
And to make it more complicated, there are people who grow up in multiple countries with parents of different ethnicities and heritages. The kids get to pick. That is "confusing" for lots of people, but it is just how the world is these days.

She's not "claiming" to be from New Zealand. She IS from New Zealand.
You got irked because you were looking for something to get irked by. Some people just like getting irked and you apparently are one of those types of people. Stop looking for things to get irked by and you'll be happier.

it just means she is not mondo duplantis or even a mondo duplantis "light". I don't think she'll ever win a world medal so the US is not missing out by her running for NZ. maybe she'll prove me wrong.

Well who at the beginning of 2024 thought Emily Makay would win a world medal?
