Texas Distance Festival 2024

Our High school can’t attend because it’s not sanctioned…. really need that to happen

I love distance races but this would be worse than watching paint dry.

Ha, yes, something upwards of 16-20 hours of racing, but spread over 2 days and most of the Championships are Saturday night. I don't spend more than 2 hours there, but it is exciting.

There are three types of meets.

The first type of meet is like the Diamond League meets, where there is usually only one race for each distance. I like that type of meet the best.

The second type of meet has two or three heats of each distance. That's OK. I don't mind seeing a "B" or "C" heat. They can still have some good runners running fast times.

The third type of meet has 10 or 20 (or more!) heats of each distance. It's an "anyone who has the entrance fee can get in" type of meet. That would be awful to spend an entire day there. The few times I've been to a meet like that it was only to watch a few specific runners and then I got out of there.

Would be nice to have the schools listed next to their names

Leachman will have to deal with lapping a lot of slow runners tomorrow. Some runners she might lap 2 or 3 times. That's a lot of time in lane two and it's going to make it hard for her to break the outdoor record tomorrow.

She really needs to find a college or pro 5k where she will have other fast runners to run with and she won't have to lap anyone.

Daniel Simmons had to do that last weekend in the 5k.

In fact, he lapped his own teammate who was always scoring for his XC team

It's a non-school meet, so I don't think they are allowed to do that.

Yes, and Leachman had to lap a lot of runners last weekend in her 5k too.

The difference is that the Nike and New Balance meets had the top 20 runners in the country.

The Texas Distance Festival is a bunch of random local runners, who are much slower, and so a lot more lapping will be going on.

But most of the fast 2 mile high school runners seldom run a 5k outside of the indoor and outdoor national meets. So every other high school 5k until mid June is going to have the same problem - lots of slow runners that need to be lapped.

That's why I'm saying that she should find a college or pro meet, unless she wants to wait until Nike Outdoor Nationals for her next 5k.

I agree with you. It is one of the faster 5000 heats in TDF history, but Leachman is on another level. The slowest runners are 18:45 or so and can get lapped twice. The 2nd to 5th ranked runners are still fast by Texas standards, but they might even get lapped once. Imagine a 17 minute flat girl runner getting lapped! I can't wait to watch Elizabeth hammer it, but this is a special race for everyone else in the heat too.

I think more than the lapped runners, low 60's and near 100% humidity (possible rain) is not ideal conditions, but not slow conditions either.

This year is a little different as usually the heaviest hitters in the meet run the 5000. Humphries running shorter and the big boys matchup is in the 1600. I think more and more going to national meets like NB has changed this.
