I can run a 49 second 400. Do I have the speed to go sub 4?

I wish the 400m could tell us that. I've seen 49s guys NOT break 4:00 and I've seen 54s guys BREAK 4:00.

Yeah, you have speed needed to run 4:00, but it’s a one in 1000+ chance, that you have the required aerobic capacity.
I ran 52 and was about 4:30. Hope that helps!
If a 54 second athlete were to race sub-4 one mile, not 1600m, we are discussing a lad who last sprinted a 400m relay leg in middle school and never sprinted 400m relay leg again and never sprinted on open 400m past middle school or 10th grade at the latest. In conclusion, you may have seen 1 guy not guys race sub-4 mile with 54.xx 400m p.b.
I like how everyone is accepting the premise that the biggest BSer on the site actually runs 49.

I don't know your age. Over the past couple of years you have posted about going out for high school Am. football team, going out for college football team, but you come across as a person past college age. If you are a college age man who can go out today or in the next six weeks and sprint 49.xx 400m, you are more likely to break 4 minutes for 1 mile than a 4:20 one miler who logs over 100 miles per week and cannot sprint sub-59 400m. If you already are a sub-1:58 800m runner, great, keep it up. Let us know how it goes.
