I remember a clinic where Joe Vigil stated that the top Africans were running 35%+ of their volume at 85% vVO2 max or better. I remember thinking at the time that that seemed excessive. I haven't added it up, but this would probably jibe well with Vigil's statement.
That looks really fun, if you could do it without bonking like he can. I'm thinking I would have to limit myself to about 35 mpw in order to make a 7 workout per week schedule possible.
Bakken aimed to replicate the Kenyan threshold-type effort through using a lactate monitor
More using intervals and doubles instead of 15k runs. Taken just found he tolerated doing the work in 2 sessions a lot better than doing back to backs.
At a super high level we are comparing like 15 mins @5k pace, 30 mins at Hm or 60 mins around MP for a hard aerobic day and deciding that for general aerobic development, volume matters more. And it is also somewhat more tolerable.
I do find it funny that people were shocked about him only running 40 mins since that is basically what Jacob has done with all those double 10ks and 1 20k/week. It is sort of heretical to downplay the long run but if you are getting in your volume it might not matter.

Which is what Malmo was saying years ago. Longer "Long runs" (15m+) are not necessary for middle distance (1500/5k) runners if the overall volume is high. The whole Lydiard notion of 22 mile runs for Snell was never necessary, regardless of his being able to do them. I think the marathon influence (Lydiard's background) and the running boom of the 1970's (Shorter etc.) made people fall in love with the LR as THE elemental basis of training, more as a reaction from recreational runners aiming for long races (half and marathon) who couldn't put in the high mileage required (twice per day), so felt the need to get it done on the weekend to compensate, even if they only do parkruns or the local 5km.

The key is getting it towards that bottom range. Can’t do 4 hours of HM pace/week. Can do 4 hours of just slower than MP.
the part that amazing me is Warhurst changing his program this much. From what I have seen, I doubt this is how he was training in 2021…
Listening to him on the Letsrun podcast, sounds like he'd doing a lot more speed work under Pat Henner's guidance. Evidentally he also does hills frequently.

People act like training that lower range is a waste of time. As if you aren’t training right at threshold then you aren’t getting any benefits. That couldn’t be further from the truth. Going slower allows you to stack way more volume and absorb it way better.
It sounds reminiscent of the training of some of the great Italian(and other European) and Kenyan middle distance runners of the 90’s and early 2000s. Bungei, Benvenuti, Longo, Tuka, Barbosa, Juantorena, etc. (Coaches like Canova, Ghidini, De Oliveira, etc.)

Yeah the large amount of volume the Norwegian method puts in achieves the goal of the Lydiard LR(mitochondria, Capillary development etc.)
I started thread below after Hobbs talked training on Coffee Club and spitballed ideas about adapting training to singles ala sirpoc's Norwegian method mega thread. Thought there were interesting ideas brought up on how to get good balance of top end quality with needed aerobic work.
I wish Brosnan would do a clinic. Hobbs training sounds like Brosnan’s. I spoke to Brosnan at the OT’s and asked him advise. Sounds similar to what they are doing or do.

I can tell you with a lot of confidence it is not similar really in any substantial way.
