We have our first scrimmage meet in two weeks (HS). The week of the meet I am going to spend the first part of practice going over some VERY basics of the sport, rules, best practices etc..
While most of my kids are experienced, we do have some newbies, and I think it's important that we as coaches don't just expect everyone to "just know" the more basic rules.
I'm thinking Track for Dummies or Track n Field 1001... whatever you want to call it.
Here is what I want to cover:
-what you need to bring to a track meet (equipment, uni, food, etc.)
-when do you need to be there?
Basic Rules (as they pertain to distance runners)
-normal order of events
-number of events you can enter
-scoring of events
-uniform requirements
-passing on the inside, waterfall start vs lanes, staying in lanes, exchange zones
-what can get you disqualified? (slamming baton, showing off at the finish...)
What else should I cover?
Again, This isn't a long power point in a class room, this is a good 15-30 min before practice.
