Firstly, I think we all agree that the one false start and you’re done rule is probably the dumbest rule in track. But I don’t just want that changed, I propose we get rid of the disqualification altogether.
Reason:
Currently, we have the technology to determine if any athlete has gotten an unfair advantage. It’s arbitrary, but it still exist. Being that all races can be restarted, there would never be situation where an athlete jumps early. False starts are pre-race infractions. A pre race infraction shouldn’t impact your ability to participate in the race.
Lastly, for those who think it would add time to meets, it won’t. False start disqualifications dont save time, they just eliminate athletes. Technically, in an 8 person final, the current system allows for a maximum of 8 false starts if every athlete false started.
