The absolute best line from this piece comes right at the beginning...
“This is a painful reality and not one that I take lightly,” wrote president and CEO John Donahoe in the email, sent to employees shortly before 5 pm Thursday and obtained by WW. “We are not currently performing at our best, and I ultimately hold myself and my leadership team accountable.”
Except you're not really holding yourself and your leadership team accountable are you? Because you made 33 million last year and you're not going anywhere and neither is the layer of fat that protects and enables you. No it's the beaten down employees making 90-100k that were trying to action your atrocious "strategy" that get held accountable.
What's painful and funny at the same time about Nike is that usually it's their competitors that get forced into stupidity at the c-suite level in order to make inroads into their dominance. Adidas famously internally combusted when it thought it would "optimize operations" by hiring a shampoo salesman in Kasper Rorsted to be it's CEO only to realize that it's quite important when you are a sporting goods product company to have a leader that actually likes sports and understands product. Now it has Gulden (a sports guy) and the company is hauling itself back onto the rails.
Nike on the other hand had no reason whatsoever to hire some McKinsey idiot (it was Bain&Co but you get my drift)/software salesman to lead it's company. First nugget of genius? "The world changed forever with Covid so let's not focus on sports anymore because people won't be doing sports as we once knew it...." Yep, good logic here. I said it on another thread a few weeks ago - the moment this company fired the sports product guy who was leading the company was the moment it went down the toilet. Since Donahoes "strategy" has come into effect, Nike is one of the single worst performers on Wall St for a company of it's cap size as it lost 30% last year when the S&P went up almost 25% to all-time highs.
So thoughts go out to those caught up in this - some of whom might read this message board.
