Nike mass layoffs officially announced

Take a look at the Nike website. 99.9% of the models are black. The demographics of the USA are 60% white, 10% black, 22% latinx, and 8% asian. Rounding error for any other groups.

Nike went woke, and is now going broke.

Laying off 2% of staff is "mass layoffs"? Do 2% off sales get people into the store?

The economy and jobs are booming according to many media outlets.

That's 1,660 people who won't be shopping for new shoes anytime soon.

Two things come to mind:

1. Excessive use of body positivity. No one looks at an overweight runner and thinks "I like the shirt he is wearing".
2. All in on the "sustainability train". Many of the recycled (shirts/pants) or scrap (Peg Turbo 2 shoe) materials are of inferior quality. Shirts rip after first wash, cushioning doesn't perform to expectations.

Both are easily fixable:

1. show me what the clothes look like on actual models
2. focus your environmental efforts on areas where it doesn't affect the quality of the product, e.g. packaging

Yeah point 2 in particular is the absolute classic schtick of the lazy and uninformed in the product world. Look at all the brands that (stupidly) believed "sustainability" (and what exact that is or pertains to nobody really knows either) mattered to people? They are dying a quick death. Now Nike won't disappear because it's massive but as a great case in point, AllBirds and it's self-fabricated "carbon weight" sustainability metric? As you said, if it comes at the behest of basic performance and expected durability then forget it.

"Sustainability" just became another C-suite favorite term bandied around to get people jobs. Made people sound smart/gave them a point of difference to latch on to and the justification was always so, so easy to sell because people believe anything as long as they think it will make them money. I would (and do) hear all the time about GenZ and how they care more about the environment than big corporations and their profits. Yeah no they don't. They care about the same stuff we did when we were their age - stuff that makes them feel good that they can afford. Stuff that falls apart doesn't make them feel good. Stuff that costs 10-15% more because it is "recycled" they don't want to pay even that premium for because they have no money. I'd always hear things like "80% of Gen Z's say they care that a brand is sustainable" - but of course they are saying that right? However when the next question was "does being sustainable positively impact your actual point of purchase decision" it was well under 10% that said it did. So if only 10% of 80% of your supposed key target consumer cares about it then is that really a model for success?

Meanwhile your actual target consumer (people 35+ with money who can afford to buy stuff) have short fuses for inferior product and in the sporting goods industry, especially footwear, there was never more available choice and options to cater to them which is why brands like Hoka and ON are just killing it. And how much talk of bogus "sustainability" do you hear from them? Hokas shoes have about as much plastic/glued TPU overlays and toxic neon colors on them as possible and they are the hottest growth brand in the industry right now.

Not at all. Patagonias model is totally different. They actually have the right way to look at it which is to make really good quality stuff that lasts forever so you don't need to replace stuff as often. Patagonia don't make their stuff out of BS materials that are "lower net carbon content" or "fished out of the ocean and blended with corn starch".

Plus AllBirds is a footwear brand and so is Nike. Patagonia isn't. Nice try.

Nike made over $5 billion in profit last year. Just like Disney is going broke while the while the share price is up almost 25% this year and $2.4 billion in profit last year. Seems going woke means you make money.

Obviously nike and disney will always make money, the rest however...

Now only are they black a lot of them are "plus size" LOL.
