What's more difficult? Becoming an olympic level distance runner, a TDF cyclist or olympic level triathlete (with the handicap of being an untalented swimmer)?
The time commitment is the biggest obstacle. Triathlon training just takes up too much time. Next would be a TDF cyclist. Everyday out there training for hours on end. This makes being a runner much easier. Workouts can still be hard but you are done long before the other two.

As far as reaching Olympic level- distance running is practiced in just about every nation.
They're not distance runners, but Burkina-Faso has a couple of world class track athletes. Most people don't even know that's a country and they've won world medals.
I think for that reason it's distance running. It's extremely difficult in all 3 disciplines but distance running probably has much more competition numbers wise.

This.
In theory if you are a national class tri athlete or cyclist you could start shopping countries and find a place where you could make the Olympic team. That's not happening in distance running.
Definitely distance runner. Generally speaking, the barrier to entry is much lower to get involved in running, and more of the global population participates in the sport, so it's harder to nab Olympic spots.

Pappas😂 you need to find a country that is going to blow their 1 entry on you. See those 11s+ men in the 100 heats.
