My Nike zoom next percent (or whatever Nike’s supershoe training companion is called) is almost certainly a good bit over 500 miles, but they feel fine while running and don’t have visible signs of damage, just regular use signs on impact points on the sole. They look too dorky for casual wear, so I’ll probably run in them until I can feel a difference. Is that bad idea?
If you can't feel a difference, then I don't see why you can't continue to run in them. The only word of caution I'd give is because the degradation of shoes is gradual, often there's no particular moment where they feel worn out. But spending too much times in shoes past their prime can lead to injury. So many people will swap them out more as a preventative measure than anything else. For some that's a budgetary decision to keep running in them, which I understand. For others (like myself) I ditch shoes at around 350-400 miles no matter what as a minor form of staying ahead of an overuse issue/injury.
I don't throw away shoes until either they start falling off my feet or I feel the first signs of a possible injury appearing for no particular reason other than those wasted shoes.

Ditching old shoes at 350-400 miles is solid conventional wisdom. I always wonder what the over distance guys of yesterday did. Gerry Lindgren didn't buy new shoes every two weeks, and even if he did, they had zero cushioning anyway.
The only ones benefiting from new shoes being replaced every 300-400 miles are shoe companies. It is the equivalent of letting a soda manufacturer recommend treatment guidelines for dentists.

I try to run my shoes 750mi... basically until I feel it's really not cushioning any longer (or falling apart). Usually I start rotating them out after 600mi or so and use them only for shorter runs on softer surfaces.
I agree not to run them to injury. I’ve ended up with some bad tweaks from going 700+ miles because they felt ok.
600 is a good ceiling
