Not a distance runner but Herschel Walker quickly came to mind.
Some trainer at my gym back in the day. Wanted to sell me PT and karate/boxing (but not thai boxing) something or other. Was probably 250 lbs and very muscular (read: steroids) and claimed he was a sub 30 10K guy.
I walked out after rolling my eyes to that.

Mark Nenow grew up wrestling, which MMA has shown that to be the best base for fighting. Karate is only going do so much till they get slammed to the ground and the wrestler starts to ground and pound or if they took a few hours jitsu classes throw you in a basic submission.
