Has anyone here ever gone on a low-sodium diet?
I'm being forced to for health/heart reasons and I'm wondering if limiting myself to < 2g of sodium per day (per my doctor's recommendations) will hurt my running performance.

What about Potassium? Hopefully you’re not limited with that…
There are sodium alternatives, such as Morton Salt Substitute and No Salt.

I can consume potassium but I'm not allowed to have too much potassium either, so I can't use Morton Salt Substitute or No Salt. Too much potassium in your blood can lead to heart arrhythmias. I can use Mrs Dash, though.
Low sodium will not hurt your running performance unless you go crazy low like less than 600mg per day. Low sodium will help your body ditch excess water weight contributing to your high blood pressure but it in itself usually isn't the cause of high blood pressure so other diet changes can be just as helpful if not more than low sodium.

Wow I didn’t know that…
for what it’s worth, I’ve been on a low sodium diet for a long while now, around 8 years. I haven’t been running recently, but I remember being able to run really well with a low sodium diet. However, I’d like to add that this was when I was in my mid-20s. I’m not sure how age will factor into this. In no way did I feel that this diet hindered my ability to train.
your biggest challenge will be eating out at restaurants. Every restaurant will typically add a truckload of sodium into your order. It’s probably best that you start cooking all your own meals, if you haven’t already.
