Nico is as good as right now Eric Jenkins was when he ran 13:15 or whatever back in 2014. BU + Super shoes = ~15 seconds over 5K vs. normal outdoor race in early 2010s.

there is excitement in the track community. the problem is it's a very small community on the American sports landscape ranking somewhere between cornhole and women's bowling.

All of the above…, plus he didn’t even win the race. 5 athletes recorded sub 13:00.0 … [ another example - 20 athletes broke 4:00.0 over the last weekend on that BU track ]. 12:57 is very 1994.

To be fair there were many threads and plenty of excitement on the night. I think they were all merged. But yes 12:57 isn’t what it used to be, and of course he didn’t win the race.

Sure 12:57 ain't what it used to be, but it is still an NCAA record. Nico also only 21, American and went through the normal high school/college progression.

You usually have good takes. This is an uncharacteristically bad one. There were lots of posts and excitement about Nico’s race over the weekend.

You shouldn’t expect those posts to continue all week long in the same week as Taylor Swift mania and the Olympic marathon trials. We live in a fast news cycle these days.

the only people who "hate" Nico Young are lonely old homophobes trolling this site who, if they actually met Nico in person, wouldn't have the guts to repeat any of the vile things they write about him.

the good thing is they would never meet him in person as Nico is a confident joyful person surrounded by people who love and support him while traveling all around experiencing life, which is the complete opposite of anonymous trolls who are all self loathing, hateful, friendless losers who are too afraid of the world to even leave their basements.

When Woody Kincaid can run 12:51 at the same meet and not even qualify for the US team, that says it all.

Oh and he didn't even win. He lost to Adrian Wildschutt and Edwin Kurgat ran faster and nobody cares

I don't really have any opinion on Nico besides he's a good runner, but this post is pretty creepy.

Can someone tell my why I am getting hammered with down-votes? I am literally just curious why there isn't more excitement around a 21 year old kid from the USA breaking 13. That should be a big deal but people don't seem to care. I thought people would care more. But why downvote the question?

BTW, I appreciate the answers I am getting... short news cycle, superbowl week, didn't win the race, pre-season, doesn't mean he'll run well this Summer, nobody cares about indoor times, etc.

I didn't think about the Taylor Swift thing (Superbowl?) because I don't have a connection to that scene. As for the OT marathon, that is sort of leaving me cold this time around because the field is so "wide open" and we don't have anyone contending in that 2:04-2:05 range...
