He's got some good quotes: "I'll see some of the guys' workouts, that they, that they've done recently.Whatever they call 'em, marathon simulators or different workouts, and I'm like, you know, I probably couldn't do that. But that's also not racing a marathon. And I feel like I'm pretty good at racing marathons, even in races where I'm not nearly as fit as I am right now."

"If they go out in 2:08 flat, it's not gonna be too fast. I think you're gonna see at least a pack of at least 20 for at least 15 miles. Probably more,but just like very conservatively, at least that many, I'd probably say 30 or 40 through the half at least"

I was thinking that's a dream race- 1:04 at the half with a big pack and watch them fall off as the leaders negative split.

There’s no way the lead pack goes out that fast. If it did, it would be a perfect situation for runners on the cusp, to give them some room, and pick off enough runners to make the team. The weather conditions, alone, will prevent a fast pace.

2:08 pace IS too fast for CJ

he races too much and doesn't do enough speed training. The most he'll do is like 8 x 1k in 2:50, which isn't good enough

Legit no way they go out at 1:04 and have a single person negative split. I think even if you had a gigantic pack with a bunch of guys blocking the wind, nobody will negative split towards a sub 2:08.

Weather is not ideal at all.

The people who could chase a sub 2:08 are unlikely to risk blowing up entirely to get that time.

I am a fan of CJ and his no fear approach to the marathon.

However, I think he is an athlete that tends to over do it in training.

If he can hold back in training just enough he will be a serious threat to make the team.

Pretty sure there was a group of 5-10 that went through half in 64' at the 2020 trials. That Atlanta course was way harder, though I admit I can't remember what the weather was like. I could see a lot of guys going for it on the chance that it's their day

Is this a joke thread? I can't point to one thing this guy has ever done that suggests he is good at racing marathons, he runs them terribly and flaunts workouts (which he appears to disparage others for here).

Lol, I guess my memory is garbage. Anyway, 45 guys coming through half at 65:45 for those curious. By 16 miles 8 guys were within 10 seconds of the leader (Rupp), and down to 3 by 20 miles.

I'd love for him to nail this one, but this is a guy who's well known for running crazy workouts and then not running as well as they'd suggest. A few years ago I remember he did a 30 mile treadmill run at like 2:09 pace or something. He's got the talent to make the team, I just hope he doesn't leave his race in a workout.

So much depends on weather. I did a marathon without readjusting pace to weather and it did not go well.

Is the quote a screw up by wejo or CJ? Going out in a time in a race is associated with a split. Imagine saying you are running the mile and you are going out in 59. Imagine saying you are going out in 2:59. Saying you are going out in 4 minutes, sounds like you are shooting for 5:20 and you have a goal of 4 at the 1200. If CJ goes out in 2:08, he either is a 4:16 marathoner or he is dumb.

He was 7th last time, 6th among returners, and better than 6th among returners for recent form. He's not as bad as some of you want to say he is.
