Chris Chavez has notoriously attempted to break sub 5 in the mile several times to no avail. Today, he broke the 3hr marathon barrier. Wanted to settle a longstanding debate here based on Chris as an example. The debate: a sub 5 mile is less achievable for the hobby jogger than the sub 3hr marathon. The idea here being that a sub 3 marathon is run at a relatively slow enough pace that more can train to run that than the sub 5 mile, in which case some people just do not have the ability to run the pace, no matter how much training occurs. Most people I talk to (marathoners who came to running as adults and are mostly interested in the marathon and hold it with reverence above all else) disagree with this.
