Division 3 runner here who wants to make that jump from average to good 800 meter runner.
I ran 2:02 high in high school as a late bloomer who came from minimal success in the mile (high 4:30s) and did well my senior year. I've run cross country in high school and college with middling success and am currently in my second year wanting to make that leap. I recently ran an indoor 2:02 after taking 2 weeks off right after cross country season feel that I have a shot to improve given I take the right steps. Currently doing relatively low mileage (about 40mi a week) and lifting twice a week (hang cleans, goblet squats, lateral weighted jumps, etc.) during winter break and am about to get back to school for indoor season. This is the first time I've ever seriously lifted consistently. It feels like there is just this clear difference between those who have that natural foot speed (400/800 guys) vs (800/1500) and above.
For my middle distance and veteran runners out there who've made a jump - was there anything that you changed in routine (weights, training, aerobic) that you felt made the biggest difference? Do I need to start lifting upper body or do fast twitch plyometrics more consistently to gain sprinter attributes? After watching a few guys from high school go from hovering around 2 minutes in the 800 to running 1:56, 1:55, how do I make that leap? Is it all mental?
Cheers
