A base is simply building up as much training as poss for your given event given your recent training/racing, for a novice this may mean 10 wks of about 50k for 10k race for an elite 1ok runner maybe 4yrs of 100k/wk with a lot of elite racing, basically a base depends on experience, goals, commitment etc
I used to run a bit but never consistently, then about 18mnths ago I decided to record my running/training and although still only from a novice perspective I continually train 50k a week and build towards personal events and I find this helps me a lot to achieve goals, improve and move forward
