Well is it?
I can't find one at any retail stores near where i live and it'll take 7 business days to order one. Will a pvc pipe or somethning similar be ok or is it too aggressive?

i've used the foam ones a couple times and have always thought there is probably somthing common that could be used instead, that being said, i dont think pvc pipe is it. the foam almost had me in tears, the pipe would give even less and i think would be too rough on the band. if you do try it and it works, let us know.
I use PVC these days, but it is pretty harsh compared to a foam roller. And a foam roller itself is painful when you're not used to it.
If you really cannot find a foam roller - I've bought a couple, from foam specialty shops not retail stores - you could always try the PVC or a Nalgene bottle and maybe wrap it in something cushiony (a PVC cozy?) or wear a couple layers of running pants to soften it up a little. Certainly a couple feet of PVC is cheap enough that if it doesn't work out, it probably won't drive you into Chapter 11.
PVC is harder to use, but it works better. I used to use a foam roller but after using it for a while it broke down and didn't get the same effect. I think the PVC would be hard to start off on, but for long term use i think the PVC is best.
I've used a PVC pipe and prefer it over a foam roller. Be gentle the first few times you use it, but after that it feels better. It's kept my IT band problems at bay for a long time.
The new black foam roller is denser and may not breakdown as quick.
bought the PVC pipe and just did some exercises. it hurts like holy hell but in a good way. i found its easy to adjust the depth of massage by using you arms to prop up according to how much it hurts... a pretty cheap and probably more durable and effective alternative to the foam roller.
