Can someone tell me, generally, how much each test costs? Am I correct to assume that insurance will not cover the tests if you request the blood work yourself, in most instances?

just go to a doctor first to get the recomendation. thats what i did and i didnt pay a dime.
I've went to two doctors, and neither one of them will request a test unless it is absolutely necessary. Same with the student health clinic at my University.
How much for the tests?
Convince a DR that you are feeling really dead-legged and not up to par and that may get a test that insurance will pay for -- not often at a student health center, but possible. If you have to pay yourself it may be around $100 for what you mention (ferritin is usually about $75, but varies around the country). Maybe your coach can write a note that you have been looking pretty weak lately and other runners he/she has seen look and feel this way usually turned out to be anemic
Had one today here in Bangkok. 5 bucks. (200 baht) You just go into the hospital and the beautiful nurse will take you to the lab, where another beautiful near draws your blood very painlessly.
Then you have a 30 minute wait, so you can chat up the nurse and get her phone number.
Hematocrit is 45.8, Hemoglobin is 15.2
I didn't get Ferritin because I had that last month. Ferritin is a 90 minute wait and is about 15 bucks (600 baht).

Hmmmm, so would it be more cost effective to have myself tested in the states, or fly economy to Bangkok and get tested?
My test recent CBC was covered by my health plan as part of a physical exam. As I suspected, my numbers reveal mild anemia. My endurance took a nose dive and I was trying to find out why. Hemoglobin is 14.4, Hematocrit is 41.3. One year ago my hematocrit was 46.2. I am supposed to go back in 1 month for repeat of these tests, plus iron & serum ferritin.
Does anyone else have experience with iron problems? Any suggestions?
