Is there any feasible way that GVSU relinquishes its strangle hold on their conference and regional dominance or will departing for D1 be the only way another school wins anything?

GVSU will continue to dominate but mostly because the rest of the GLIAC sucks lately. They'll never go D1. That would be a terrible move.
As long as Grand Valley State is in the GLIAC they will continue to dominate.
No chance.
GVSU is in the perfect position to continue their dominance.
1. A group of conference schools that show no desire to compete at the highest level of D2
2. Great facilities and an admin that fully supports athletics as a way to build the image of the university
3. A perfect landing spot for athletes who either don't aspire to D1 or are just below that level -- GVSU likely hasn't "recruited" an athlete in years -- they recruit themselves to the school and GVSU turns away many (or allows them to walk on and see what happens).
They are never going D1 and will continue to dominate the conference.

If they go D1, they have to find out how good they actually are against real competition.
The running programs will have zero input on whether they move up or stay D2. If the university wants to, it will happen. Not saying it will but Baltes won't have any say in the decision.
Rest of the GLIAC needs to join forces, create a superteam at THE Lake Superior State University
Aside from Davenport and Parkside, every other GLIAC school is located in an absolutely PASS city. Why on earth would anyone remotely interested in athletics (or regular life in general actually) want to live in Saginaw, Gary, or the UP?
