We talked abut the same thing recently. The US only has trade shows side show races sponsored by Chinese apparel firms. No prep championships for XC, Outdoor TF, Indoor TF, nor Ekiden.
High School is a special USA thing. There should be a high school champs, max age 18, for XC, Outdoor Summer T&F, Outdoor Winter T&F, Indoor Winter T&F, and Cross Country.19
Mt Sac has the undisputed world's toughest cross country course in history, millions of affordable hotel rooms close by, an inter-continental airport only minutes aways with two 2-mile runways for inter-continental jets like the Boeing 787, plenty of restaurants, etc.
Caveat ... due to1950s Hollywood Payola Recording and Game Show scandals, Los Angeles Country ordinances prohibit charities and non-profits from paying for Seb Coe and Max Siegel's 5 Star Hotel in Malibu, 1st Class AIrfare, Lamborgini rental. etc. Mt Sac is forbidden by law to law to pay travel, food, accommodations, etc. for non race participants.
Nike, Footlocker, and RunningLane aren't enough? How many more do we need?
I think he wants just 1 instead of 3
I don't understand this. If you have just 1, say Nike, where do all the other kids go that can't get in to Nike? Answer - they would go to something else like FootLocker or RunningLane, which would bill themselves as a national championship as well. And we would be right back to where we are now. Are you going to make it a felony to have another race besides Nike? If not, there will always be more than 1. It is too big of a country with too many runners that want to run an end of season national meet. And any such meet can call themselves a national championship.

Needs to come through State qualifiers (50 of them) to be a true prep national championship. Anything else is just glorified invitationals - even footlocker isn't really a regional qualifier, as it isn't a school meet sanctioned by school associations.
the real question is why we don’t have one standardized one.
even more so with track. don’t get me started on nike, adidas, new balance, and usatf junior outdoor nationals.
Like everything else, US society is driven by a need for corporate profits. Why should running be any different.
Footlocker didn't monopolize to the point that the door wasn't open. They just didn't care or didn't think anyone would care enough to try. Eventually one of the companies will take steps to shut the others out of hs post season xc.

I guess the real answer is that only a sport's governing body can take steps to create a definitive meet. And when the governing body only cares about personal profits like usatf - footlocker, nxn, etc. are the national meets not the usatf junior xc meet.
