Feels like it isn't crazy for a sub 9 California kid to stop running after hs but a sub 9 East coast kid not running collegiately is pretty much unheard of. Still an amazing time to run 4:10-4:15 and/or sub 9 from California but a lot of these kids get put in really fast races where they just gotta follow the next guy. Compared to East coast kids they don't even get to run a fast race until the end of the season and that's probably a winning state time where they're from. I won't even get into some of the great weather racing conditions Californians get sometimes. I know a lot of smart college coaches are aware and know how to identify the diamonds in the rough. But it feels like some great East coast talent is overlooked at times and had they been put in the same conditions as the Californian they might've over performed them.

I think the best college coaches do weigh different regions differently. We're in a less competitive region where weather can be a challenge at times and have had multiple high level coaches tell us they regularly subtract 10-15 seconds from 3200 performances in our region when comparing them to the West coast.

No, the internet exists. If you are fast you will be found. Also there are a lot of schools on the east coast. LOTS, not so many DI’s in the west

Also, even great high school runners who can solo big wins just become pack runners in college. So any kid that can "get put in really fast race where they just gotta follow the next guy and run sub 9" has demonstrated a valuable skill at the collegiate level.

Yep this is big for coaches. If you look at the people who excel in college, it's the ones that can do well running mid pack in a big race. Coaches know this. Don't make excuses about the weather etc or being in a small race. Go to a big race and run fast and finish 20-30th place.

Plenty of big meets and competition all over the country. If someone wants to be good and is willing to work for it there is no "disadvantage".

Completely disagree. With Tully runners, milesplit and dyestat it's never been easier for coaches and athletes to see where distance runners are at on a national level.
With foot locker, nxn, nbin, Nike indoor, brooks PR, penn relays etc, there are also plenty of national meets to attend.
