Hello, my program is moving our home course away from our high school to a park near our school. I was looking for some alternatives to properly mark our new course. We have historically used field marking spray paint on our high school's campus, but the officials in the park do not like the idea of spray pain in the park-which I completely understand. I am trying to brainstorm a less 'permanent' marking solution-one that can be easily cleaned or washed away when we are not racing. Has anyone used chalk before? Is that a viable solution? Please offer any and all ideas you may have

If you can use posts and get that yellow "crime scene" type tape. Also- those little red flags and orange cones (pylons) work weel. Maybe some poles with signs that point the direction.
I had a whole set up like this at my course. I actually stored it in my garage so I could load it in my car the day of a meet and be ready to go.

Make sure there is no ambiguity at turns. Athletes have less than a split second to think about which way the course "should" go. There is nothing worse than leading a race and running off course because the meet director rushed to mark it the evening before.

Start with the NFHS rule book for marking an XC course. There's a system with flags to indicate Left, Right, and Straight. Pylons and course marshals are other options if you can't mark the ground.

An alternative to spray paint is spray chalk. Will wash away with some rain but will still be visible for several weeks otherwise, so check with your park on suitability. At a minimum they may want it used only on grass or dirt. Dashed lines have less impact than solid lines. Powdered chalk is a safer bet for all surfaces.
If considering marking flags, another option is disc cones. Stick with all orange or yellow for best visibility.
If using traffic cones, you can get directional arrow signs which fit on top. For example:
