Hanson's turn down money?
Hanson's turn down money?
That was a great response by Kevin Hanson. Hopefully the opportunties keep coming for their group and groups like theirs.
In a society where so many people are willing to be bought it is gratifying to know that some folks still have ethics. I would have taken the money. I also would not throw away the money that the Hanson's do. Congrats to all involved. Some got more money and others have been given a forum to state their opinions. I have a question for the Hanson's. In accepting the money were you forced to sign a confidentiality agreement with NYRR? I bet they did.
but they had no problem taking the money for Briney's Roads Scholarship. Not everything is squeaky clean. Double standard.
Sincerely,
Kevin Hanson
Hansons-Brooks ORIGINAL Distance Project
So the Hansons are no longer an "Olympic Distance Project" but an "ORIGINAL Distance Project." Interesting.
Did they take the money? Or did Trent take the money? Big Difference. And that was a year ago as well.
I believe the dropping of the name "Olympic" had more to do with it being a possible infringement on a copyright / trademark than anything else.
How is it that the Hansons can afford to turn down that money? Where does their funding come from? 40-50k is a lot of money. I appreciate someone standing up for their belief's but you also have to eat.
Thank you.
They have enough resources. Brooks is a full fledge sponsor of their efforts and Lifetime Fitness I believe also helps out quite a bit. Plus, the Hansons have a few running stores to draw from, so that is a fair amount as well. They are the one program that has been able to really fund themselves successfully with a lot of athletes.
Why on Earth don't we turn running into horse racing? Let's raise up a huge gambling scene around running and you'll never have to worry about funding again. The races would be 1 mile - 5k. Nothing too long that would bore spectators and gamblers.
that would be cool, but it would seem that it would be too easy to fix. I mean, runners don't make a ton of money so they could be paid off pretty easy. They do bet on the races in Australia I believe.

Can't you fix horse racing? Do horse jockey's make a ton of money? Either way, your funding problem is solved. How many people would have gotten rich on Max King this past weekend?
they dont have enough resources otherwise their #2 or #3 guy briney wouldn't have had to apply for a Roads Scholarship.
You really need to drop this "agenda" you have against Trent getting the Roads Scholarship. You sound really bitter and immature.

Morals and ethics do not belong in sport

All this proves is that one of their athletes has lower standards of ethics than they do.
I think the clock is ticking on the Hanson's leaving the elite athlete development business. By early 2007, they will drop their program and cite "lack of response from USATF and major marathons" as the main reason. We will all forget they turned down as much as $25k per quarter/$100k per year (the plan for LDR Project funds from all sources) and cry that these guys could not pay their rent.
If the obligations (from NYRR) were so onerous, we would have details. Is Mary W asking that the whole Hanson's squad run some BS 5k in Central Park next December? I cannot imagine anyone cares.
