I've seen a lot of speculation recently about BTC departures. Because the athletes themselves didn't state reasons, I'll share why. I'm in the industry and have had this confirmed by multiple people.
-Cooper: Not racing up to his standards. Lack of coaching presence. After a big 2022 wanted to take the next leap with BTC but he felt like he took a few steps back through his performances (particularly at USAs).
-Grant/Elise: The Oregon move. Neither was happy with it and felt disrespected by the move. They weren't getting the attention they once got, had workouts where no coaches were there, and more. Both stated that they would try for a year to give it a shot and well the year is up and neither wanted to continue with the setup. Elise also said on The Running Effect Podcast that she has pretty consistently overtrained the past two years, she didn't state that's why she's left but I've heard from others that Jerry/Shalane did not handle her training the best.
Karissa is next... It's over for the women's program. Jerry is hoping to add on some Oregon kids in the coming years, but time will tell if Uncle Phil will let BTC exist until then.
