Which would be better for a faster mile and a half? Indoor track or outdoor road?

    Hello, I have a PT test coming up real soon in which I will have to complete a mile and a half run in a certain time; (Military/Law Enforcement Standards. I've been running for approximately 6 weeks on an outdoor dirt/gravel trail which has various slight inclines & turns, and I've also incorporated some hill training twice a week to help increase my speed on a flat surface,

    For my actual PT test, I was given an option to either run on an indoor track, outdoor pavement road/track, or on a treadmill. I ruled out the treadmill due to the fact that all my training has been centered around actual running without the use of a treadmill. I live in Ohio, and the weather is getting a little colder this time of the year, but I do enjoy the fresh air at times. My question is, Which surface would help produce a faster mile and a half time for me? Outside road or Indoor track?

    Right now probably indoor track just by virtue of it being winter in the midwest, so you won't have to deal with the cold or wind

    An indoor track will most likely be faster than outdoor on roads (unless its all downhill or something wild) because of controlled climate conditions and a better consistent surface to run on. However, some people aren't comfortable with the turns, setup, and overall feel of indoors. I would say run a mile on an indoor track and see how you feel vs outside trail running. If you're fine with the indoor setup, I definitely do it there as it would be easier to time your pacing per lap.

    Assuming all weather/temperature conditions are equal, and there is no speed/distance adjustment for the use of a treadmill, the obvious first choice is a treadmill--if the treadmill is motorized. Simply set the treadmill to the desired pace and run for the needed time without falling off or needing to reduce the speed.

    2nd choice would be an outdoor track, 3rd choice would be an indoor track IF the track is banked and fast, and last would be the road. If the indoor track is flat, it would be in last place. Obviously, pacing is of paramount importance; tracks permit pacing via splits very easily.
