When I asked him about it, he said that this was realistic for myself and another teammate since we've been able to hold that pace for 16x400s w/60s rest for the past few weeks, as well as holding 65s for a 1500. I can see this being reasonable for my teammate since he handled 70s for the 3200 back in HS, but I'm not sure about myself since I've never had a good 3k / 2mile race. A few weeks ago I split a 15:40 5k en route to a low 25:1x 8k, also passing through 3k in 9:16, which surprisingly didn't feel too hard. This tells me that I'm probably in shape to break my track PR of 15:27, and likely go under 9:00 as well, but that's still a long way from the 8:30s-8:40s range.
Now the thing is, going out in 68 the first lap or around there doesn't sound too crazy, but I'm starting to think it might be smarter to try and target even 70s instead. I don't know how it'll feel to go through 800 in ~2:17-2:18. However, our coach always gets pissed off if we open conservatively and thinks the only way for us to run our true potential is to get out aggressively. He'd rather that we go out in 62 for a mile and die then go out in 67 and progressively pick it up, even though I've had some great races with the latter strategy.
