The front page quote and USATF press release indicated that only 4 developmeny clubs will receive money. Team USA, Big Sur, Boulder Group, and Team Minnesota.
The question is simple. Why did USATF decide that these are the only clubs that deserve funding. Nothing for Hansons or the Farm Team or Zap, Yhis appears to be misused funds by the USATF. I think that the NYRR should have been able to decide how they spend their money instead of USATF.
Thats a joke.Ritzenhein,Torres and Schwald have very nice shoe contracts, why do they get money and not someone like Max King?

What's different is that the 4 USA Distance Centers have a formal affiliation with USAT&F.
Hanson's, ZAP, and Nike Farm Team were all founded privately with private funding arrangements. The USA Distance Centers all had some sort of centralized ties from the onset. Whis is the better model? Weak answer: "It depends."
USAT&F & NYRR have at times over the past 10 years seemed to be at loggerheads. Overt cooperation is a big step forward.
And Max King has it best of all -- he's got a good job and thus does not have to make athletic decisions based on short-term financial considerations. It's working for him, so it's safest to just get the f--- out of his way.

The Hansons were part of things but said thanks but no thanks. I don't know all the details.
Like someone said...the other teams are not affiliated with USATF, so why should they get any of that money? And if you think about it, it's not really that much money per athlete in the first place.
This is great news. I was fearful that Brad Hudson or Larsen or Vigil or one of the other coaches that work with athletes that have six figure shoe contracts were not going to be taken care of.
All of these guys are already being paid. This does nothing for development of our young up and comers that are trying to make it on their own. USATF does not now nor will they ever understand. This is just like the USOC giving $$$ based on medals. MEDALISTS ARE ALREADY COMPENSATED FINANCIALLY.
Here's an idea: How about you spend more time worrying about your contribution to the sport as opposed to worrying about how the NYRR organization decides to donate ITS OWN money.

The only athletes that would be headliners in the New York Marathon would come from those groups. NYRR are paying for influence. I think it is smart business.
NYRR is interested in developing Olympic champions, so I think they are putting the money where they think it's most likely to make a difference in this regard. They're more interested in turning 28 minute 10k runners into 26 minute 10k runners than making a 30 minute guy a 28 minute guy.
Are you sure that the coaches are already receiving the compensation they deserve? This is not what I've heard. I'm sure that all of you who claim that these coaches are doing just fine have seen copies of their most recent tax returns, right?
If you keep badmouthing people who contribute to the sport, they may begin to feel that their efforts are not worth it. Or hopefully they'll just be confident enough in what they're doing to ignore you.

i have long disliked the nyrrc for various reasons, some valid, some petty.
but they have begun a transformation, placed themselves front and center now, and the reason is mary wittenberg.
she is a leader, and a person who can build coalitions, make friends, and raise funds. any body at usatf capable of that?
she has a very bright future, and there are politicos who are taking notice.

Prof Rob has a good point. NYRR has the money. They can do what they want with it. Giving it to clubs that has a proven track record of success is the best way to do it. To say that it isnt doing anything for development is not accurate. I bet this isnt the last donor. I bet a lot of others will step up and give to this cause. I bet that more clubs will be helped as a result.
The fact is that USATF brought in this much money that couldve been spent elsewhere. Isnt that enough?

Then why did they offer the Hansons a cut, but they declined? It makes you think that there is a little more to the story. For the record, they could care less about developing anything but marathoners. The only reason they want guys running 26 minute 10k's is so they can run the marathon. The 10k is not the focus.
