Hey, all!
I’m a 26 year-old male targeting an A-goal marathon this coming weekend, 29 October, and I’m wondering if my reach goal of 2:30 is in the cards. These boards seem to have a lot of guys who run right in that zone, so I figured I’d crowd-source it. Here goes.
Recent Racing History:
I’ve run eight or nine previous marathons, with my last PR being a 2:36 solo time trial during COVID. I had two great builds in 2021 and 2022, only to be thwarted by stress fractures literally two to four weeks before race day. I also ran a 54 minute ten-miler earlier this year in horribly windy conditions and with a bad cold.
Mileage:
I ran big mileage throughout all of 2023, almost always at least 85mpw, with probably 10 weeks in the 92-98mpw range and the last month averaging over 100mpw. I peaked at 106mpw the week before last, ran 80 to begin the taper last week, and will just chill the miles before the marathon this week.
Most of my filler easy miles were 12-14 miles, with probably 15 moderate long runs of 15-21 miles
Workouts:
I’ve had some big workouts this cycle, to include:
-18 miles with a half mary in 1:14:58, for a total average of 5:49/mile.
-18 miles with a half mary in 1:14:14, for a total average of 5:45/mile. (Not totally continuous, stomach issues)
-20 miles with 15 miles at 5:41/mile average, for a total average of 5:46/mile. (Also some stops for GI issues)
-10 x Yasso 800s in 2:26.7 average on only 60-90 seconds rest.
-Between 10 and 15 tempos of 5-6 miles at 5:18-5:28/mile, all of which were sandwiched inside 10-15 miles total for the run and bookended by moderate miles at 6:20 or faster.
Looking back on my cycle and workouts, I’m feeling pretty confident, but I also don’t wanna be stupid, go out like an idiot, and blow up to jog it in. Am I looking good for at least sub-2:35 and possibly sub-2:30? This is uncharted territory for me, so any and all advice is appreciated. Thank you, and run safe!
