Actually Francis broke Bradshaw's record as he was 5 years younger.

No, his throw was only bettered by one thrower and it wasn't Bradshaw. I have heard this statement made so many times before that it almost becomes the truth. Kind of like how people actually believe that the 1972 Dolphins get together and drink champaign every year after the last undefeated NLF team loses. They never did that.
They threw the old javelin in those days. The new javelin doesn't fly nearly as far.
Bradshaw was dumb enough to fall for the "javelin catcher" joke, though.

Francis' record stood for about 18 years.
He set the national high school record for the javelin as a senior in 1971 at 259 ft 9 in (79.17 m); the record stood until 1988.But football wasn't Bradshaw's only sport. Later in his senior year, he set a national record by throwing the javelin 244 feet, 11 3/4 inches, prompting more than 200 colleges to offer him a track scholarship. He also pitched for the baseball team. But Bradshaw had his heart set on football.
