If you have ever been really fuccing good, there is almost always someone better somewhere. Plus one day you will be slower than most of them or else dead. So check yourself.

I can recall that the better I got, not only did I feel more accomplished, but i began to realize that lots and lots of others could get to where I was getting to in exactly the same way. On both counts, any natural tendency to look down on those slower than me vanished. But I'm guessing that not every one is all the self aware. And by nature runners are competitive.
I used to. As I've gotten older, I'm just glad to see people getting out there and making an effort. Looking back, it's pretty ridiculous because even at my absolute best I was still so much slower than the pros.

Yea, same.
I'm older now and respect people who are getting out there and trying to better themselves. Life is tough out there.
At my absolute best I was still way slower than the people who travelled with the team and scored in college XC .
I raced long enough to respect everyone. So many people that were behind me ended up in front of me and vice-versa. I think most have the same experience I did.
Other than that, I can honestly say that those who were never going to get ahead of me ended up being my best friends probably because I never looked down on them either.
Back in the day, when I was still running races, I figured anyone faster than me was fast and anyone slower than me was slow.
Reminds me of a joke this Asian lady told me years ago when I was 'driving cab' in the City. It was a joke circulating in the Asian community in Chinatown at the time:
Question: "Do you know how many Caucasians it takes to screw in a lightbulb?"
Answer: "One. He just holds the lightbulb up to the socket and lets the world revolve around him."
I never look down on people who are trying their best. That could be me! And like another poster wrote: we can always find someone faster to compare ourselves, too.
The people I did used to look down on - and this was only in high school b/c college weeds them out: the fast slackers. E.g., people who could be way better if they only logged the miles and were as committed as I was. those people I judge!
I am now a lot older and slower than I was 20 years ago. I ran with guys who qualified for the trials. Do not think we looked down on folks who were slower. They kept me around and I was the slow one. Now when we were on the track I moved out to lane 2 when getting passed. Like another poster said there is always someone faster.
It’s illogical to look down on people slower than you. They are the ones who make you look good by comparison. Nobody can be considered fast unless there are others who are slower. I appreciate those people.

While there are faster runners than me, none of them beat me at the 2023 conference 1500m final in my conference. And one day I'll retire from running and I'll still be able to say I was fast.

There used to be this joke on this board.
Anyone faster than you is doped, and anyone slower than you doesn't care about time. So you are always the fastest clean runner and the slowest serious runner at the same time.
