I think he uses his arrogance purely to motivate himself and play mental games on his opponents. I reckon he wasn't being serious about the 3000m steeplechase record, however his opponents in the middle distance will go into any race with him feeling intimidated and overwhelmed. It's akin to the Muhammed Ali talk before a fight.
This video is great. First, I didn’t know he steepled when younger. Second, he’s beckoning to the crowd to celebrate while he runs down the home stretch just like he did in the semi-finals of the 1500 this year. too funny.
Hilarious, 6 years ago and back then he was already motioning to the crowd for applause like he did in races this year.
This championship was on his home track in Sandnes, and this was his third or fourth gold, I think. The steepler is his «teacher» from the «Team Ingebrigtsen» series, when he’s in training camp in the US.
tbh it didn't sound sincere to me. id love to see him give a good run at it, but the pause before he answered made it feel like he said it for the cameras more than anything. he wouldn't hesitate like that for the 1500/mile/3k/5k
the only reason im not sure about it is because he's already run the steeple at worlds, so he's got at least some background in it. plus 3k is probably his best distance atm.
