Listening to the latest podcast, and both Rojo and Gault made repeated reference to the fact that Jakob would have won gold at WCs if he hadn't been sick. I am a big Jakob fan but what annoys me about this take is that ensuring that he isn't sick for the biggest race of the year is part of Jakob's job. Preparing physically and peaking for a major champs is stressful; getting through rounds is stressful; the mental pressure going in is stressful. All of this is much more stressful than preparing for a low stakes DL. Immune systems are weaker when we are stressed, fatigued or overtrained. Jakob getting sick at this particular time (and for world indoors, and for Monaco thankfully shortly before olympics) isn't some random, complete coincidence like Rojo and Joga make out. If Jakob has a mild pattern of getting sick when peaking, he needs to switch up his peaking routine/diet/psychology going into these championship races. Kerr was clear that he left no stone unturned in ensuring he was at his peak for this race, even employing a personal chef for the weeks prior. Can Jakob honestly say the same?
LRC note: Here is a link to this week's podcast. We talked about Jakob for about 15 minutes starting at the 3:52 mark.
