Wondering if there's evidence that smacking the crap out of your legs on the line does something productive? Is this more of a ritual?

I think paralympic athletes were banned from "boosting", does this come under that? ;)
I'd heard that Sha'dopey Richardson is generally considered to be a bit of a slapper - is that right?
it's like getting a hug when you're stressed out; it encourages the muscles to release excess tension
granted, some people literally just slap their skin like they're in the video they were secretly watching the night before, which in that case maybe they get turned on psychologically and benefit from the increased pain threshold seen during arousal

I only do it because it reminds me of the good times I had with your mother.

Seems to be something people do when they are nervous at the line. Of course it doesn’t actually help. But some people just dont know what to do and they are stabding there so it feels better to pretend you know what you are doing by shaking your legs, jumping high in the air, or slapping your legs a bunch. Its just a way for someone to let out their nerves.
Benefit is everyone gives you plenty of room in the pack, because they think you're mental.
