Was it a lack of conditioning? Hence not being able to handle rounds. Or was he hurt? Or is it a simple case of choking?

He looked gimpy in that semifinal. Injured and making a go of it anyway from what I saw.
Pushing a very fast pace from the front in a field with most athletes of similar ability almost always ends with the leader being spit out the back. Burgin was 23.8 at 200, 1:35-1:36 pace. It happened in one of the other heats as well, Brazilin I think. It worked for Arop but he was a little more reserved in his pacing and he likely had a bigger talent gap over the field.
He’s like Seb axle.

My guess is the first one, exacerbated by going out in 49.4.
He's only been training for 6 weeks and is on low mileage due to an achilles issue. And as JWH said, going out in 49 was suicidal. I'm surprised his coach/dad didn't send him out there with a much more conservative race plan.
When is he going to get a proper coach?

A pair of Olympic silvers isn’t too shabby.
I didn't think he looked at all right in the first round and I said so at the time. I agree that 49.41 was perhaps a little bit quick for the first lap in his semi-final, but not suicidal at all, for the likes of Burgin. It's what he does. Furthermore, Hoppel was second at the bell, in 49.53. and Wanyonyi was fifth at the bell, in 49.73. Three of those four athletes within 0.32 of Burgin at the bell, between second and fifth, ended up finishing in the top four. That's off a suicidal pace, is it? And Burgin stated to really suffer between 500m and 600m, not from 650m to the finishing line, which is where those who went kamikaze tend to pay the price. Lazy commentating, from the so-called expert pundits. I really hope it is down to a lack of preparation/races and that he is not still being impeded by the DVT that afflicted him last summer.

He ran 1:43 on 2 weeks of training???
He said in the interview with the BBC after his heat that the achilles injury had been hampering him, although it felt OK in the race. He didn't look too upset after the semi, I'm sure he just decided to go out fast and hope for a miracle.

None of the above.
Saw him working out on Margaret Island today
