I'm running Berlin this year but then also running CIM since I had a deferred registration from a year ago. Berlin is my goal race (targeting 2:40) but I'm also going to give CIM a serious go at it with 10 weeks between the two races. Anyways to the question - it's hard for me to get time off work and I am trying to decide whether to fly late Friday night or Saturday morning to Sacramento for CIM. It's about a 5 hour flight for me. The race is on Sunday December 4th.
Friday flight would leave at 9pm and get to Sacramento just before midnight pacific time. Which would really be like 2am my time (central). I am hesitant to do this because I won't actually get to the hotel until 3am my time, and then am I screwing myself by potentially not sleeping well 2 nights before the race? I'm sure I'll knockout at 3am but I feel like it's not ideal to go to sleep so late 2 days out from a marathon.
The Saturday flight would leave at 9am and get there at noon pacific time (2pm my time). My concerns with this option is basically just being on 5 hour flight the day before the race. I'm just worried I'll feel stiff flying in less than 24 hours before the race start time. I always feel like I feel kinda meh after being on an airplane.
What would you choose out of these 2 options? Friday could be safer since I am there over a day before the race on Sunday and can chill on Saturday and do nothing. I just don't like the late travel and that I'd be up until 3am when I usually go to sleep around 9-10pm...Saturday I'd be able to fly at a normal time (and also save a bit of $ since I will need a hotel for one less night) but it's literally flying on a 5 hour flight the day before the marathon and not sure if that's bad or not
