Since this is a distance board, I would assume you are running either 4x800, or dm. Proper way to carry baton is in right hand so you can give it off to next runner's left hand who then immediately switches carry back to right hand. The reason is that the outgoing runner should be facing inside of track. However, there have been many instances where this doesn't happen, since distance runners usually do not do handoffs often nor do they run relays every weekend. Switching hands at end of relay is dangerous, especially if you are tired. A dropped baton after an 800 or 1200 leg is not a welcome result of a hard run leg. Having the next runner face away from the inside of the track is also not the best solution, as the runner can't see traffic immediately upon receiving baton. Solution, either get comfortable learning to carry the baton in your right hand (run with a baton in practice a few workouts) or keep baton in left hand and make awkward handoff. Unless your coach is adament about baton carry, if you run a fast leg, he or she will dismiss your issue with a left hand carry.
