Wondering if any masters athletes have difficulty matching recommended interval paces from Daniels Running Formula VDot tables? Been following the 5k training plan for 40-50 miles per week from the DRF book. Made some adaptations because I had been running about 20 miles a week for the last decade and haven't raced as much as when I was younger. Slowly worked my way up to 30 miles a week during phase I and have been holding at that for a while now with no problems. I shortened some of the repetition workouts to account for less miles a week. The book recommends repetitions be no more than 5% of weekly mileage for example. Also my long run is never more than 7-8 miles. I capped my tempo at 3 miles. The rest of the easy runs got me to the 30 miles a week. I used a recent mile race result from before I started the plan to calculate my VDot and get the recommended training paces. I had no problem with the fast repetition paces for 200s/400s or the threshold/tempo paces, but now I've just entered phase III and I just can't match the recommended pace. Is this normal? It is hot here where I train (92 when I ran today), but I can't figure out why the reps and and tempo were fine, but the intervals have been a struggle. Trying to figure out if I should slow them down or just go by effort? Maybe the mile wasn't the right race distance to calculate VDot? I'm overtraining? Or the paces aren't as achievable as you get older? Paces only possible if you run at least 40 mpw?
