The reality is that with the exceptions of Galen Rupp and Meb, American men have not been able to compete with the top East Africans for years (decades). Now, maybe if the Americans had been raised at 8000' elevation and walked/jogged to school every day from a young age instead of being bussed to school, and if they grew up in communities that were passionate about the sport, and where our nation's talent pool was all funneled into distance running, then yes, their performances would have been both disappointing and surprising. But whether the reasons are cultural, geographic or genetic, the 10K results are hardly surprising. On a plus note, America can still kick Kenya's butt when it comes to basketball, baseball, golf, Nordic skiing, tennis, and volleyball. So all is not lost and we should not go home DEVASTATED. (Not sure why LRers always put that in caps, but when in Rome . . . . )
