NXR Heartland Predictions 2023
Boys teams:
1. SPASH WI. Returning all of their 1-5. They return 3 sub-9:20 guys, in addition to another 9:27 and a 4:27 guy, which makes for an outstanding top 5. They return some good depth behind that too. They are looking to win their first NXR Heartland title ever after getting second in 2019 and 2022.
2. Wayzata MN. Won NXR last year, and they return 6 of their top 7, but they are losing their #1, and SPASH has better front runners and more depth.
3. Wichita Trinity KS. Didn’t run NXR last year, but they have an 8:50 guy on the team (Shively) who could possibly be top-10 in the nation. They also return 9:20, 9:45, 9:55, and a 15:34 guy who didn’t run many outdoor races last spring. They are looking to be only 5-deep so they don’t have much room for error.
4. Dowling Catholic IA. Returns they’re 3-6 after getting 3rd at NXR. This is also a solid program that always reloads. They had a great 4x800 at nationals with only one senior.
5. Minnetonka MN. Returns 5 guys after getting 4th at NXR, and also some other incoming juniors stepped up during track. Took 4th last year at NXR. Like Dowling, they graduated their top 2.
6. Cedar Falls IA. Took 18th in the championship last year. Returns a solid top 2 (including a really good sophomore Merrick), but loses 3 varsity seniors. Also has a 9:38 3200 transfer coming in.
7. Bismarck ND. Didn’t run in the championship race, but at the state meet they almost beat Williston ND (who took 7th at NXR). Also lost only 1 senior. They have lots of depth.
8. Mounds View MN. Lost McArthur but returns 5 sub-10 guys, and 3 more sub-10:10 guys which will add depth. Took 12th at NXR last year.
9. Madison West WI. Did not have their best race at NXR but got 3rd at the WI state meet and they return their 1-6. Also placed 9th in the Griak gold race.
10. Minneapolis Southwest MN. Placed 6th at NXR the last 2 years and they return 4 of their top 5. Also has a really solid individual Sam Scott. They need to close the 4-5 gap to place in the top 6 again though.
