And it's not like Jokic is an unfair comparison to literal Olympic champions like Mu or McLaughlin, who are easily the best in the world, yet race half a dozen times (if that) per YEAR. Mu won Olympic Gold after 29x400/800 races. But it's just too much to expect her to do more than a 1500m prelim/final and 1 800?
This doesn't even just extend to Mu or McLaughlin. Why in the world has Hobbs Kessler raced 1 1500 outside of USAs all year? He ran a huge PB in his season opener, and I'd bet a big part of why he missed the team this year was because he has almost no experience racing. The last 2 years, Cole Hocker came 6th in the Olympics after running 4x800 races, 12x1500/mile races, and 7x3k/5k races, and Mario Garcia Romo came 4th at WCs after running 14x1500/mile races. They've continued racing consistently as pros, and the results have been really positive thus far. The mindset that athletes can't race often isn't just detrimental to the sport, it hinders an athlete's development.
On the complete opposite side of the spectrum, there's Conner Mantz. I have never once tuned into a race to watch him, yet I see him so much that I can't help root for him every time I see him. Millrose 3k in January? Of course! Soundrunning 10k in March to tuneup for the NYC Half? 100%. 5k/10k double at nationals? Wouldn't miss it. Winning 20k champs a month out from Chicago? Duh. This year he ran The Ten in March a month before running Boston, then ran a 1500 to open up outdoors before the 5/10k double at nationals. Plus a half marathon in January. Who else has that kind of schedule? He's generally not winning, but he always runs pretty well, and hopefully makes a splash in the marathon next year.
Jakob is also showing that you can be the best in the world and still run crazy times. He shows up indoors and outdoors every year in peak form. You're telling me he can run 7:54 and 3:27.9 6 days apart, and then run 3:28/3:27.1 a few weeks after that, but Mu just can't handle a 1:56 in July '22, 1:58 in June '23, and 1:55 in August '23? I don't buy it. It's one thing if she just doesn't like running. I can understand that, I just wish they were honest, because it feels really fishy when they're obviously lying about why they're not racing.
