Let's say that a runner straight out of high school goes to a Division 1 University.... races one race and gets injured. He gets a medical redshirt for that fall and does not compete in the spring. If that person were to transfer to another Division 1 University would he have immediate eligibility?
As I understand the rules: if he was a recipient of athletic aid, his former university would have to release him from the scholarship, in order for him to be eligible immediately. If it was an intra-conference transfer, additional conference rules may apply.
He wasn't on a scholarship and it's not in the same conference.
I transfered D1 to D1, different conferences, and was on aid. I had to get released by coaches, which they graciously did. I'm not sure if not being on aid makes a difference. Either way, if you're going to transfer, I would let your coaches know was soon as possible. The longer you wait, the less likely they are to release you. Also, it helps for you to have a good, legit reason to transfer. If it was for a major or something, then they probably would understand and release you. If it was for better partying or something along those lines, probably not.......you get the idea.
I believe if you transfer to a NAIA for a year and to DI the next you won't have any trouble.
You need the release if you were ever on the roster. Don't think you even need to have competed. Most AD's will give you the release unless there was bad blood.
You will have to sit out for "residency" requirements, 16 weeks - at the new school. You are not allowed to transfer from 4year to 4year two times with out penalty.
One time transfer rule, you can compete immediately (next fall) at the new school.
