Indicated so in this podcast (probably around the 50min mark). Anyone know if Fisher will run the 10k if McGorty drops it? How long does that injury generally take to heal?
Listen to this episode from The Running Effect Podcast on Spotify. Today on the podcast is a man who has been on fire recently, Sean McGorty! Sean is an OG guest of The Running Effect, so it is always a joy to bring him back...
6-8 weeks with a lot of rest for normal people. Elites doing high mileage can just reduce the physical load and come back sooner. However, there would be a loss of fitness. Even if Grant recovered in 4 weeks, his training would have been far from optimal.
He's not qualified for the 10,000m so pretty obvious he's not running the 10,000m. Only 27 athletes fit the quota for that event, 8 of the spots are cross country selections. The other 19 all have the standard except for I think one person made it on ranking. If they got rid of the dumb cross country selections for a track 10,000m then McGorty would have been ranked high enough. He probably has a better shot at finishing top 10 in the 10,000m than he will in the 5,000m. The 5,000m is absolutely stacked this year.
He's not qualified right now but that could change. He needs three pertinent runners to be removed who are now ahead of him.
It's been observed on this board that Australia isn't going to take Tim Vincent, the Oceania champion, who only ran 29:46, and who now occupies the 27th ranking spot.
If Fisher also scratches, McGorty would, as things stand, only need one more pertinent runner ranked ahead of him not to be selected by his nation to compete. That could happen.
If it happens and McGorty doesn't want the spot, Conner Mantz is ranked right behind him. But he may not want the sport either, if he is focused on marathon prep.

What I’d like to know is, if Tim Vincent is qualified by virtue of being the Oceanic champion, does that mean the only reason McGorty isn’t qualified by being the NACAC champion is that the U.S. has 3 men with the time standard?—and if one of those 3 scratched would the Area Champion qualifier kick in?

Area champions get an entry "on condition that there is no better entry (by World Rankings) of another athlete from the same Area in the same event."
Tim Vincent's area title could get him in, in theory, because there is no better ranked runner from Oceania.
McGorty would be outranked by Kincaid and Klecker, at least.

Sean does state he would "love" to do both . . . says Jerry's training sets him up well for the double. . . final WA rankings out next Wed (8/2) so lineups for all countries will be known a couple days later . . .
