Reasons:
* he is relatively undertrained. In the NCAA, his training was far from optimal + school. Within a year of being under an organized scientific coach like Ritz performing structured threshold training, he has dropped his 1500 PR by four seconds (3:33 -> 3:29). As Ritz continues to refine his methods to approach the rigor of the Ingebrigtsens, Yared will continue to improve.
* he doesn’t even take caffeine or bicarb. I was listening to a coffee club episode and was shocked to find that Yared does not take any sort of caffeine before a race, much less bicarb. Caffeine might be single-handedly the biggest legal performance enhancer there is. These are all things someone like Jakob has optimized, and present another place where Yared can squeeze more seconds.
* he has world class training partners, like Olli and Mario. His training partner setup is better than Jakob’s given that Jakob’s brothers are not in the form they used to be in. Yared’s teammates are all improving, and will continue to push Yared more in workouts.
In conclusion: The goose is already near the top of the Men’s 1500m this year with one year of methodical threshold training under Ritz & still has so many more ways to improve. He has an optimal training setup, and if he can stay healthy, he will challenge the likes of Jakob Ingebrigtsen next summer.
