I don’t think Jakob Ingebrigtsen is arrogant. But neither do I think the question is of interest… But of course he’s arrogant now and then -else he wouldn’t be a human. But as I said I don’t think he’s arrogant as a whole…
What’s of interest is what lies behind some seemingly episodes of arrogance -Rojo’s recent question about pacing / not pacing is an interesting example, but if people think that was arrogance just have a look on these interviews some years ago:
Jakob was 16 or 17 years old and a journalist asked Coe and Cram about their views on the prodigy. Well, they both of course talked about his immense talent, but then they both also came with the same warning: He should do more speed work (meaning being faster in the 800m)… So how did young Ingebrigtsen respond to his two ideals’ well meant advice (and now we are talking “arrogance”): He said: “They don’t know what they’re talking about!”
Was Jakob arrogant and disrespectful? Not at all in my opinion -he just said the truth as he saw it (and time has in many ways proven him right).
Well, this story (about Coe and Cram, about arrogance and truth, about speed work vs endurance) is longer and more detailed, but must be held in reserve to avoid a super long post. But my point and question is: Am I right in my view that Jakob isn’t arrogant, but extremely (and rightly) insistent in his insight about the importance of building stamina. And that this stamina can make him win championships without strategy or tactical manoeuvring -simply outrunning everybody from start to finish..? Or will he surprise us with a renewal of his training strategy (a year or two) before he leaves for longer events..?
