I got this idea after Jakob's 3:27-low this past weekend. Being a fan of his has been a blast the past few years. Prodigy as a junior, always racing, seemingly improves every year. There are is just enough doubt remaining that he consistently exceeds expectations. Can he ever overcome Cheruiyot? Yes, and in the Olympic final! Can he actually be competitive in the 5000 after losing the 1500? Yep, dominant world champ! Sure, but can he actually break a world record? Four seconds ahead of Komen good enough for you? Even now though, uncertainty remains given all the fast 5k times this year, plus the Wightman kick.
It's also wonderful being a fan of Kipyegon, who over years kept rising to the challenge, winning big races over and over again, getting closer and closer to the world record. If she had stalled out at 3:50, it might have been a slight let-down, so to see the 3:49 earlier this year felt so richly deserved (and cathartic, given the context of the previous records), and the 14:05 soon after blew my mind and gave us another week to marinate in her success.
On the other hand, being a fan of Bekele was incredible 15 years ago, but tough after that. Every couple of years in the 201x's Bekele would run something that reminded us he was still the GOAT, but could never quite put it together for a significant period of time (no shame in that). It's not remotely fair to his unprecendented career, but we're left with the sense that a 57:xx half marathon and a marathon world record were only a matter of the right race at the right time, that somehow even the greatest of careers was less complete than it could have been.
Farah is another example that was slightly frustrating since he never went for truly fast times in his main events. Even if he was "only" capable of 12:45, I would have liked to see it.
All of this is of course subjective--and as much about circumstances as the runners themselves--but I'm interested in your thoughts. Whose career has been rewarding to follow, whether it's their attitude to racing, performances under the spotlight, narrative arc, or just years of injury-free improvements?
