Just about every sport requires a wider range of athleticism than running esp distance running.
Swimming, rowing, tennis, sprinting... hell even cyclists. those dudes look seriously strong and athletic. Distance runners look feeble and impoverished.
They are both very good sports. You can probably make a lot more money in tennis. Tennis requires a lot of skill, talent, coordination, and technique. Running just requires putting one foot ahead of the other and try to do it as fast as possible. Let's face it. People get into running, and especially distance running because they aren't good enough at anything else. Nothing wrong with that. At least they found something they could excel at.
The athleticism required to be a good runner doesn't even come close to that which is required to be a mediocre tennis player.
It's the opposit. You can be a decent tennis player while not fit if you have good technique. Look at legend tournaments. They are still quite good at 60yo.
tennis was really good. then the rackets got bigger, the courts got slower and so did the balls. it’s so damn hard to win a point now and serve volley is as good as dead. as a result matches are all drawn out, boring, baseline slugfests.
also, the players take way too long between points.

I would argue that serve and volley matches are boring to watch. I’ve been getting into tennis and then also watching more tennis and I looked up old “classic” matches between Sampras and Agassi and it was so BORING. All Sampras did was serve and volley. I thought it was a parody but it wasn’t. The matches today are way more fast paced and entertaining.

If you are not fit, you can't be a decent runner.
You obviously don’t understand what “athleticism” is.
Tennis matches are too long and there are so many tournaments to follow I eventually stopped following the sport altogether. That said, it has the obvious benefit of the top players actually playing at various tournaments throughout the year instead of only July/August.
