The top 3 women in the 5k all ran the 10k. The men struggled coming back. Why? Both Mens and Women’s 10k were incredibly slow for 5 miles with a 1 mile race. That seems like it should be easy to double back from 3 days later. I thought Woody would have no trouble with his new found strength.
Woody was really the only one who was off. McGorty had a good 5K, finishing on the podium again. Klecker should have beaten McGorty but ran like an idiot in the middle of the pack the entire race.
Also the men's field is just more competitive than the women's field. It is going to be nearly impossible for any American man to beat a fresh Abdi Nur in the 5K after racing a 10K three days prior.
McGorty did double back well and Chelimo exceeded his performance from the 10k (albeit in his better event). Secondly, the women did not have anyone fresh at the talent level of Abdi Nur.
There were more women in the 5k with the World standard than there were Men. Several of the women with the standard were fresh. Just off the top of my head Andrews, Henes, Infeld.
The most interesting thing to me was that “double threshold “ Woody who constantly brags about running 2 workouts in a day couldn’t run 2 races in 4 days.

I've done it, a hard 10,000 followed by a 5,000 two days later. It's really hard and I have no problem understanding why someone doing it would struggle in the 5,000. I have a much harder time understanding how someone won't struggle and my hat's off to them. The only possible explanation I can think of is that the ones who don't struggle just weren't running the 10,000 with as great an effort, regardless of pace, as the ones who do.
