That's definitely true in the relative context of T&F at large (Sprints and some field are the prestigious events) but I don't think it's true relative to the 1500m.
People who aren't distance runners consider the 1500m and 5000m equally lame, and people who are distance runners consider both events to be about equal in prestige and equally interesting to watch.

I guess instead of running as a professional for a few more years and going up in distance, he'll get a nice cushy job at Nike being an "ambassador" or something.
for the casual, it is the 100 and the marathon. nothing in between matters.
in high school, the 1600/mile has prestige over other distance events, but I don't think that's true in college and the pros.
I think his thoughts on the events are born of self preservation, whether he knows it or not. he just wouldn't be good enough in the 5000, so the effort to move up just wouldn't be worth it.
Coe (sorry, "Lord" Coe) agrees, wanting to have the 3000 the longest event simply so the 1500 wouldn't be the longest event. Right now though Centro's comment is a cop-out. He stands zero chance of hanging with the modern 5K. Even at his peak they weren't running 16 minute pace until the final 400.
Have you ever actually watched the Olympics on TV with a non-runner?
Many times, why?
The 1500 does get a bump, of course it's because 'the mile' and 4 minutes. Like holyyy...these guys just ran 3:30 for the mile! Didn't that guy in Chariots of fire barely break 4?

The 1500 is the prestige event. And the 10,000 has more prestige than the 5.
I know I could probably list every 1500m Olympic champion from 1960 through 2021, but would struggle with the 5000.
Think of Coe, Cacho, Morceli, El Guerrouj, Kiprop, Makhloufi, Centro, Ing.
Vs Yifter, Ngugi, Bauman, Nyongabo, Wolde. Sure there was El G, Bekele and Farah winning the 5,000, but they were doubling back from their main and more popular events. And tell me Aouita wouldn’t rather have a 1500m Gold over his 5,000 Gold. But he ducked Coe and Cram for the easier win.
That’s the entire premise of a 1500m runner moving up to the 5000m. To have an easier chance at winning because it’s less glamorous and less competitive.

Glamorous and competitive are not equivalent.
Few athletes choose to pursue hurdles as an event, but the 110M hurdles are a fan favorite, more people have heard of Lolo Jones than Galen Rupp, and there are more runners trying to be top 5Kers than top hurdlers.
I agree that many 1500M guys move up to the 5000M because it's easier (to win and arguably easier in terms of pain), but that's because 1500M guys tend to have better natural distance running ability than pure 5Kers.

The 1500m is most like other sports, in that anyone can win it given how the race is run. Running it fast from the gun takes away a little from that suspense but not by much. You still need someone else to take it out fast. There is danger with every tactic.

Ok, maybe true, but Aouita had the chops at 1500 and he still has an Olympic gold medal. That’s kind of the point. You have to be elite at 1500 to truly contend for the podium at 5000.
Personally, I think Centro is foolish. He should’ve moved to 5000 last Olympic cycle. He’s not getting any younger and he’s not getting near the podium in the 1500, especially in a 3:32 and faster race. People forget this guy basically time trialed 13:00 once. He could’ve perhaps been the thick of it back in 2021. He has his Olympic gold at 1500, has never broken 3:30, time to move up.
Go away, nobody cares about you jamin. All you do is cry and bring up terrible takes because you’re a “hater- fan” of the sport, except when it comes to good looking women. You’ve never experienced any type of real running success and have no idea of common sense when it comes to controversial running takes.
