As things stand, a man with a 28:30 pb and a woman with a 34:01 pb would be going to the 2023 Worlds thanks to their cross country rankings. And is US Army member Emmanuel Bor being punished for running World XC?
This is kind of crazy—according to the WA site, Marta Garcia’s 10k PR is 34:12. But that’s only the half of it—the final qualified runner, steepler Veerle Bakker of the Netherlands and the University of Portland, doesn’t even have a 10k PR. Has she not run the event?
Props to both runners for working the system to reach worlds. Go get a big PR. Just please move to the outside once you start getting lapped.
Yeah, I’m good with this. Rogers is washed and would just be another WC tourist with no real prospect of further development. She should go run a marathon already.
Sounds like a better management team. Rogers could have done the same and didn’t.
They thought she could run the standard at The Ten and didn’t.
Fiona just missed at the 2nd Sound Running meet with Taylor Werner pacing. Natosha was hurt and didn’t run.
She has had plenty of opportunities. To cry victim after the fact is a little disingenuous. She is not a victim.
If she stayed with Hansons they would have likely known this and figured her situation out. Instead she's trying to go it alone and it just cost her a WC berth.

Both things can be true.
It is 100% Roger's fault that she didn't qualify. Everyone is playing by the same set of rules. A few other women have taken advantage of that.
However, it is still terrible that some of these women have been allowed to qualify this way. The xc qualification as implemented was a terrible idea. That needs to change.
Gault’s article from the first post is a trip. Imagine a major part of your job is to qualify for a world championship. Then imagine having NO IDEA about a path to that meet. It’s one thing to know about the XC path and ignore it or hope the track path works out instead. But to not even know? The coaches, agents, and athletes in that article aren’t doing their full job, plain and simple.
I like the XC qualification in theory as a way to encourage participation in XC which is nearly dead on an international level. Hopefully after this first go-round or two more people will catch on and we’ll see runners like Rogers, Kelati and Mantz running some of these XC meets. But in the interest of fairness, the XC meets that count for points need to be diversified to include a couple in six continents instead of them seemingly all being in Europe.

this. have a feeling more athletes will be on the cross circuit in coming years to earn those spots!

I think that granting 8 slots, or 30% of the field as the Gault article noted, is probably a little much, but I do like the idea of rewarding XC results. Maybe knock it down to 4 or 5. It's a new system so maybe WA will work out the kinks in future.
No, the last thing WA should do now is ask the US to organise a XC race, US wouldn't know proper xc if it hit them in the face. Running around golf courses and football pitches is NOT cross country. Also they compare times over different courses which shows how utterly clueless on the entire subject they are.
I called it. She switched to Puma and did not make the team. Expect a bomb or DNF in Berlin from her.
Edna Kiplagat switched to Puma and ran her worst marathon in many years.
Shadrack Kipchirchir switched to Puma and stated the racing shoes pretty much fell apart at 30km in his two marathon attempts, resulting in two big fails.
Natosha Rogers is up to #23 in the World Rankings. I think she is going.
She is not. The field is full barring any scratches. No one is getting in off ranking at the moment.
That’s not true. Gault forgot to factor in that countries can only send a maximum of 3 athletes each + defending champion and Diamond league champion. Rogers is #17 when you calculate it this way. Very close to cut off, but definitely in. Gault is terrible at researching these things (so is USATF).
Since Rogers won't qualify based on world ranking, she has a slim chance of finding a 10K in the next three weeks to run the standard. Based on this criteria, would Schweizer take that third spot as she has the standard?
